Details and Learning Outcomes for Intermediate Grammar Levels I, II, & III

Achieving ILR Level 2 (Limited Working Proficiency) is facilitated through progression in Intermediate Grammar and Conversation courses.
Intermediate Grammar I
Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:
- Use simple present and present continuous tenses, along with appropriate adverbs of frequency to express present time
- Maintain subject-verb agreement
- Ask and answer yes/no questions
- Use simple past and past continuous tenses with time clauses to express past time
- Express past habits using “used to”
- Use “be going to” and “will” to express future times appropriately, differentiate between them, and convey various degrees of certainty about the future
- Use time clauses and if clauses to express future times
- Use simple present and present continuous tenses to express future times
- Use “be about to” to express the immediate future
- Use the present perfect tense and distinguish its use from simple past tense
- Use the present perfect continuous tense and distinguish its use from the non-continuous present perfect tense
- Use the past perfect tense
- Ask and answer information questions and tag questions
Intermediate Grammar II
Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:
- Correctly use singular and plural nouns, maintaining subject-verb agreement
- Choose the correct word order when using prepositions to express time and place
- Describe nouns using nouns and adjectives
- Use personal pronouns as both subjects and objects
- Use possessive nouns, possessive pronouns, and possessive adjectives
- Use reflexive pronouns
- Use “other”, “another”, “the other”
- Use modal verbs to express a wide range of semantic nuances
- Express preferences
- Use conjunctions to connect ideas
- Use comparative expressions including repetitive and double comparisons
- Use passive voice
- Use past participles as adjectives
Intermediate Grammar III
Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:
- Understand how to use definite and indefinite articles and how to generalize without using an article
- Use countable and uncountable nouns
- Understand when to capitalize nouns
- Use adjective clauses with relative pronouns “who”, “whom”, “that”, “whose”
- Distinguish between and use gerunds and infinitives
- Use “in order to” and “for” to express purpose
- Use infinitives with “too” and “enough”
- Use noun clauses as subjects or objects
- Use noun clauses starting with “if” and “whether”
- Distinguish between and appropriately use direct and indirect speech
