Advanced Level Curriculum Overview
Program Name: English for Applied Purposes Program
The Advanced Level curriculum is designed to develop the ability to communicate flexibly in English across all aspects of daily life and various specialized topics. This program focuses on equipping students with the English skills necessary for academic or professional content.
Students who complete this program are expected to be able to communicate effectively with sufficient fluency, grammatical accuracy, and vocabulary on practical, social, and professional matters.
Required and Elective Courses at the Advanced Level
The required courses at the Advanced level include:
- Advanced Grammar I, II, III
- Advanced Conversation I, II, III
Elective courses at the Advanced level can be chosen from the following subjects:
- Pronunciation
- Vocabulary
- Reading/Writing
- Listening/Speaking
- TOEIC and TOEFL Test Preparation
Additionally, there are many other elective courses available each semester.
Considerations for Advanced Level Courses
- A minimum of 240 hours (i.e., 20 hours per week over a 12-week period) of Advanced Level elective courses is required.
- The requirements of this program can be completed in a minimum of one year. Students may take more than the minimum 240 hours of elective courses within the program but must complete all program requirements within two years.
- If you complete a higher-level class like II or III first, you cannot go back to a lower level.
- Completing III does not necessarily mean you must advance to a higher level.
Achievement Goals at the Advanced Level
Students who complete Advanced Grammar and Conversation achieve ILR Level 3 (General Professional Proficiency). Features of students at ILR Level 3 include:
- Can speak with sufficient structural accuracy and vocabulary to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on practical, social, and professional topics.
- Can discuss specific interests and areas of expertise with relative ease.
- Usually has a very complete understanding of normal speech rates.
- Possesses a broad general vocabulary to the extent that searching for words is almost never necessary.
- Can easily understand despite a clear foreign accent.
- Has good control over grammar, with errors rarely hindering understanding or causing discomfort to native speakers.
