Overview of Business English

At our school, we offer the following classes as elective courses at all levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced) for students who are focused on building language skills useful in English-speaking work environments.

Please note that the electives offered vary each semester, so contact us for more details.

Business English (Comprehensive English)

This class aims to improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the business world. Students enhance their ability to communicate effectively in English in various business settings and develop the communication skills necessary for business success.

Specifically, students will learn vocabulary and expressions needed for communication in various business situations. Learning occurs through case study analysis, conducting presentations, negotiations, and remote conversations with others via phone and video chats, and conference calls.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to communicate more fluently and confidently about commonly discussed topics in business and interact effectively in many social situations.

Business Slang (Comprehensive English)

Similar to the Business English class, this class focuses on developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills applicable to the business world, but while the Business English class focuses on formal English, the Business Slang class enhances the ability to communicate in casual business language commonly used in everyday work environments.

In the Business Slang class, students learn vocabulary and expressions necessary for communicating with business colleagues and peers. After completing this course, students will be able to communicate in a casual manner that reflects straightforward and grounded thoughts and ideas commonly expressed among peers and close associates.

TOEIC Test Preparation Course

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a test specially designed to measure the everyday English skills of people working in international environments. This test is often required by companies that need to communicate with English speakers and is sometimes used as a qualification for admission to universities and professional schools instead of a TOEFL score.

Students in the TOEIC preparation class learn strategies to achieve the best possible scores on the TOEIC test’s reading and listening sections.

Specifically, students will acquire skills to:

  • Quickly and accurately read texts and identify key facts and important information.
  • Distinguish between main ideas and other significant facts and details.
  • Understand vocabulary in context and determine pronoun references.
  • Identify various relationships between ideas (e.g., contrast, cause and effect, agreement and disagreement, steps in a process).
  • Track the development of ideas throughout a text.

As our school is the only official TOEIC test center in Hawaii, students can prepare and take the test in a familiar setting.

Practical Experience Program

Students in the Practical Experience Program develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while interning in an English-speaking workplace. Students work 10 hours per week at the workplace and meet once a week in the classroom with classmates and instructors to actively share their experiences of working in American workplaces.

Specifically, students will learn:

  1. How to write a resume.
  2. Appropriate behavior during interviews.
  3. How to apply this knowledge to secure a job.
  4. How to use and further develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through actual workplace experiences.

Typically, students find unpaid positions in fields of their interest. In the past, internships have been secured in diverse specialties including healthcare, elderly care, and animal welfare.
