Characteristics of students at ILR Level 2 include:
- Able to meet the requirements of everyday social interactions
- Can handle most social situations with confidence but not easily, including casual conversations about introductions, current events, work, family, and autobiographical information
- Capable of handling limited work requirements, although they may need assistance when dealing with complexity or difficulty and can understand the main points of most conversations on non-technical topics (i.e., topics that do not require specialized knowledge), albeit sometimes using somewhat circumlocutory expressions
- Often have a recognizable but significantly inaccurate accent
- Usually able to handle basic structures quite accurately, though lacking thorough or confident control of grammar
