The English For Applied Purposes Program

The English for Applied Purposes Program

The English for Applied Purposes Program is designed to help students develop a mastery of English that is sufficient to engage in meaningful communication about all aspects of daily life as well as a variety of specialized topics.  Students in this program concentrate on applying their English skills to academic or professional ambitions.

Students placed in the English for Applied Purposes Program are expected to be able to speak with sufficient fluency, structural accuracy, and vocabulary to participate effectively in all conversations on practical, social, and professional topics of interest to the student upon exit from the program.

Course requirements for the English for Applied Purposes Program are as follows:

  • Advanced Grammar I, II, and III
  • Advanced Conversation I, II, and III
  • A minimum of 240 hours (i.e., 20 hours/week per 12-week term) of advanced-level elective coursework.*

Program requirements for students who are placed at the beginning of the English for Applied Purposes Program can be met in as little as one year.  Students can take elective coursework in the program beyond the 240-hour minimum requirement; however, they must complete all program requirements within two years.
*Advanced-level elective coursework can be chosen from among the following subject areas:  Comprehensive English courses (i.e., theme-specific courses that emphasize mastery of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills), Work Experience Practicum (non-paid internship opportunities that require the use of English in a real-life work setting), Idioms, Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking course pairings, and TOEIC and TOEFL Test Prep.
